PPC part of new university sustainability "cluster hiring"
The PPC will be collaborating with the Department of Urban and Regional Planning to hire a resource economist as part of the new university sustainability cluster hire. Sustainability has been identified as a priority for the University of Iowa by President Mason. Announcement of the hire was made recently by Provost Loh. Other partcipants in the 'cluster hire' of 10 new faculty positions include the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Law, the College of Engineering, and the College of Public Health. Multiple awards for PPC research assistant
Nikhil Sikka, Graduate Research Assistant at the PPC and Ph.D. student in the University of Iowa's Civil and Environmental Engineering program, was awarded the 2009-2010 Jan Kibbe Student Scholarship sponsored by MOVITE (Missouri Valley Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers). A professional group representing public agencies, academic institutions, private industry, and consulting groups, MOVITE grants the yearly scholarship to students who have demonstrated excellence in the area of traffic and/or transportation engineering. Mr. Sikka also recently won the Midwestern District’s Student Poster Competition at the 43rd Midwestern ITE District Annual Conference, the Public Policy Research Award at the U of I's 2009 Interdisciplinary Health Group Student Poster Session, and took the 2nd-place prize for the best research paper (Social Sciences & Education Division) at the James F. Jakobsen Graduate Conference, also at the University of Iowa .
New report on racial and ethnic disparities in health care of Iowa's children
In this report evaluating racial and ethnic disparities in the health status and health care use of children in Iowa, we present information collected for children in 4 different racial/ethnic categories: African-American (non-Hispanic), white (non-Hispanic), and two groups of Hispanic children—parents who chose an English interview (HEI) and those who chose a Spanish language interview (HSI). Several significant health disparities were found between children from these different racial/ethnic backgrounds. Read more.
Special appointment to Scientific Advisory Committee
PPC Associate Ray Kuthy (Professor, Preventive and Community Dentistry) has been invited to serve on an External Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) for the Collaborative Centers for Research to Reduce Oral Health Disparities. Three centers (Boston University, University of Colorado, and University of California at San Francisco) have been funded by NIDCR to address various issues with caries in early childhood.
PPC Researcher publishes in Science
Professor John Lee (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering), a 10-year collaborator at the Public Policy Center, has published an article in Science. The article, entitled ‘Can Technology Get Your Eyes Back on the Road?’ describes the attentional mechanisms that relate to driver distraction and the potential for technologies to mitigate these dangerous episodes.
