  Current Projects

Integration of analysis methods and development of Analysis Plan—Funded by the Strategic Highway Research Program II, this program develops an analysis plan for a multi-thousand vehicle test plan.

A longitudinal randomized control trial intervention for teen drivers using event-triggered video—Funded by the CDC, NHTSA and state DOT partners this project is the first longitudinal study (four years) to examine early driving development using video feedback.

The use of video feedback in urban teen driving—Funded by the Iowa and Minnesota DOT and General Motors, this project uses the same protocols from the rural teen study in the suburban city of Eagan Minnesota.

The use of video feeback on rural teen driving—This study represents the first scientific examination of on-board event recorders that provide feedback to newly licensed drivers. Certain events ‘trigger’ the system installed in participants' vehicles to begin recording a 20-second video and audio clip. ‘Triggered’ events include abrupt accelerations, braking or erratic steering. A communication and ‘coaching’ protocol was developed for parents to use in discussing triggered events.

Development of design and engineering requirements for in-vehicle text messages (General Motors)—This consumer product design research program examines and determines the most efficient presentation, content, and interaction for text information for passenger vehicles. Designed a theoretical framework and experiments to address design and engineering requirements for text messaging systems.
