RELAX: TALK: GROW (RTG): The Military

RELAX: TALK: GROW (RTG) is a networking/policy planning event hosted by the University of Iowa African American Council and the Public Policy Center. RTG combines fellowship, local artists and policy discussions. Addressing the experiences of Iowa City’s black folks both on and off campus, this month’s program on “The Military” runs from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, May 5, and features a blend of relaxed socializing, creative performance and targeted conversation.”Panelists include: 

Georgina Dodge, the University of Iowa's Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Vice President, as well as the university's Title IX Coordinator. She has a Ph.D. in English from UCLA and is an adjunct associate professor of English with scholarly interests in multi-racial literatures, autobiography, and cultural studies. She serves on the national Board of Directors for the Association of Title IX Administrators as well as the boards of the United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties, the Iowa Network for Women in Higher Education, Humanities Iowa, and the Stanley Foundation. Prior to her academic career, she served a six-yeat enlistment in the Navy, working as an electronics technician on communications, radar and meteorological equipment. 

 

Melvin O. Shaw, attorney. Shaw is a general practice attorney at The Law Office of Melvin O. Shaw, P.LC., located in Coralville.  His practice areas include real estate, estate planning and probate, and business law. Shaw graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2004. He earned an M.A. from the University of Iowa in 1997 and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Shaw is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association (Probate, Real Estate, Business Law committees). He serves on the ISBA Business Law Section Council. He is a member of the ISBA Young Lawyer’s Division Professional Development Committee, Vice President of the Johnson County Bar Association, and serves on the Johnson County Bar Association Title Standards and Continuing Legal Education committees. Shaw is a Steward at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Iowa City, serves on the Board of Trustees and is Secretary for The Housing Fellowship (Johnson County), The Board of Directors and is Audit Committee Chair for The Community Foundation of Johnson County, Iowa, and is a member of the Board of Directors of The University of Iowa Black Alumni Association.
