A Symposium on Health Care Reform

July 20, 2010
8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center

The University of Iowa hosted a symposium to review and discuss how the recently enacted federal health reforms may affect health policy in Iowa, including the need to address immediate possible impacts in financing and infrastructure. The Health Reform Symposium considered key aspects of health reform, including:

(a) Medicaid Expansion/Iowa Care Provider Network Expansion
(b) Health Insurance Exchanges
(c) Care Coordination
(d) Health Information Technology

The conversation considered how the federal health care reform may intersect with state legislation, including the expansion of Iowa Care coverage in Senate File 2356, report of the Legislative Health Care Commission established pursuant to S.F. 389 and the recommendations of advisory committees established in 2008 by HF 2539. The audience included health system administrators, purchasers and payers, health policy researchers and analysts, public policy leaders, leaders of public interest organizations and representatives of health professional organizations, as well as faculty, staff and students interested in the health reform from a state perspective.

The Forkenbrock Series provides a forum for dialogue about policy areas from applied, academic, and interdisciplinary perspectives. The series was established in honor of David Forkenbrock, a nationally recognized transportation researcher. Dr. Forkenbrock established the Public Policy Center at the University of Iowa in 1987 and directed the Center until 2007. His vision was to enable public and private sector decision makers to work with faculty, staff, and student researchers to explore solutions to complex problems related to the public interest.
