    DentaQuest Foundation announced that the University of Iowa Public Policy Center will be funded for its competitive renewal entitled “Access to dental care and the oral health safety net: An assessment of the public and private delivery systems and collaborative options for improvement”, aka Dental Safety Net in Iowa (DSNI).

    The Federal Health Resources and Services Administration recently awarded the University of Iowa a three-year grant ($1,364,993), with a start date of September 1, 2013. Ray Kuthy (Project Director) and Susan McKernan (Co-Director) are the primary Public Policy Center staff involved in this grant for the Coordinating and Improving Oral Health Workforce Activities in Iowa project.

    A survey conducted by the Public Policy Center at the University of Iowa shows 3 percent of children without medical insurance. The results come as policymakers prepare for changes to health programs with the Affordable Care Act, which takes effect next year.

    PPC Director Peter Damiano presented at the 2013 AcademyHealth State Health Research and Policy Interest Group Meeting in Baltimore on June 22, along with colleagues from UCLA and Ohio State University that also conduct statewide health surveys. He was part of a panel titled: Use of State Population Health Survey Data to Inform Health Care Coverage Policy.

    PPC Director Peter Damiano participated in a roundtable discussion on oral health disparities to help develop the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan for the National Institutes for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). The NIDCR is one of the 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

    Natoshia Askelson and Jennifer Turchi traveled to Boone, IA to participate in a workshop called, "Students Taking Charge," as part of the health policy program's Iowa Department of Education grant.

    Oral Health in Children in Iowa is the latest research based on the 2010 Iowa Child and Family Household Health Survey (IHHS). The analysis finds that oral health and access to dental care is very good for children in Iowa.

    The Health Policy program has released a new brief presenting results from the 2010 Iowa Child and Family Household Health Survey (IHHS). The Adolescent Health in Iowa brief provides statewide results about a sample of issues related to the health of adolescents ages 10-17 years in Iowa.

    Iowa is one of 20 states to be awarded a 2012 Team Nutrition Grant from the US Department of Agriculture. The goal of the grants is to support schools as they strive to serve healthy food, provide nutrition education, and create an environment focused on healthy eating and physical activity.
