Dr. Dan McGehee, Director of the Human Factors and Vehicle Safety Research program at the University of Iowa Public Policy Center, sat down with guest host Brian Gongol on the Simon Conway Show on November 19, 2014, to discuss autonomous vehicles.

Recently, autonomous vehicles have created a buzz around the United States (e.g. Google Car).  However, at the University of Iowa, vehicle research and development in automation has been occurring for decades.  Dr. McGehee reflected on the first autonomous study he conducted at the University almost exactly 20 years ago.  At the time, Dr. McGehee was working in a research program called the "Automated Highway System," which was a USDOT project.  The goal of the project was to understand how drivers enter and exit off of automation while on the freeway.

Dr. McGehee also touched on technologies that exist in many cars today, that may be rolling out in the near future, and the public health factors that continue to drive the research.
