Jon Winet

Jon Winet is an artist, media producer and professor in the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History Media | Social Practice | Design Area Intermedia Program. Winet was the co-founder and longtime director of the Passport Project Student Success Initiative, which became Explore Iowa: Your Passport to the University and Beyond in 2020. 

Winet's current research includes “AIDS Quilt Touch,” the digital expression of the 1.4 million square feet AIDS Memorial Quilt; "Our Las Vegas,” an online cultural animation project; and “Las Vegas Casino Carpets” (working title), a curatorial project for the University of Nevada Las Vegas Barrick Museum of Art, Las Vegas, Nevada with a projected exhibition launch in 2021. He has started research on the restaging of 1997 and 1998 interactive projects for public screens with fellow Xerox PARC alumni Anne Balsamo, Dale MacDonald, Margaret Crane, Scott Minneman, and J.D. Beltran. Winet is in the pre-production phase of “2020: an American Vision” for the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council Powerhouse Gallery in Oxford, Mississippi with a satellite project at the University of Mississippi Museum of Art. In November 2017 he completed “Power 2016,” a multimedia journalism project focusing on the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections that he directed, working with writer and cultural critic David Levi Strauss and photographer Allen Spore. 

Winet's collaborative media projects, installations and exhibitions have been presented at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center (Buffalo, NY); La Mama Gallery, New York, George Mason University Fine Art Gallery (Fairfax, Virginia); Museum of Contemporary Craft (Portland, OR); Detroit Art Market; 2014 Life Is Beautiful Festival (Las Vegas, NV); the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival and American University Museum of Art (Washington, D.C.); George Bush Presidential Library and Museum (Dallas, Texas); Walker Art Center and Intermedia Arts (Minneapolis, MN); San Jose Museum of Art; White Columns, (New York, New York); San Francisco Art Institute, SF Camerawork, Friends of Photography and Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco; and ISIS Arts, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. His photographic work has been included in numerous publications including Aperture’s online project Exposures (New York, NY); The Brooklyn Rail; and Little Village (Iowa City, IA); and The Public and Artvoice (Buffalo, NY);

During Fall 2017 while on a year-long research leave, Winet led “From SFMOMA to the Ghost Ship: Exploring Bay Area Arts Ecosystems,” an undergraduate seminar in American Studies and the History of Art Department at UC Berkeley.

Winet has been actively involved in artists’ organizations for three decades and currently serves on the advisory boards of Southern Exposure (San Francisco) and Transformer Gallery (Washington, D.C.). He also holds a fellowship at Provisions Library in Washington, D.C.
