EU Ambassador to the U.S., the Honorable João Vale de Almeida

EU’s Ambassador to the United States, the Honorable João Vale de Almeida, visited the University of Iowa campus on Wednesday, March 28th to deliver a public address at 3:30 p.m. in the Levitt Auditorium in the Boyd Law Building on "The State of the EU."

Prior to his appointment as ambassador to the United States, Mr. Vale de Almeida was Director General for External Relations at the European Commission, the EU’s “executive branch,” where he was intimately involved in the formulation and execution of EU foreign policy.  He also served for five years as chief of staff and main policy adviser (Head of Cabinet) to the European Commission President.  He has worked in several other senior positions in the EU Commission, including in the education directorate.  He was a journalist for seven years before entering government service.  Vale de Almeida is a Portuguese national.
