Evaluation of Eye Glance Data for Driver Workload Testing

The objective of the study was to apply measures of driver workload to the evaluation of certain elements of a route guidance system during its use for wayfinding. A route, consisting of 7 to 10 turns was driven by test participants, taking approximately 10 minutes. The participants were split into two groups, one using the route guidance system, the other a paper set of instructions. Video data were recorded. Our task was to measure the locations and durations of each of the eye glances made by the participants, giving Total Glance Time or Total Eyes Off-Road Time.
