Berg Presents on Gun Violence at Dubuque Community Forum

Mark Berg, Associate Professor in the UI Department of Sociology and Director of the PPC's Crime and Justice Policy Research Program, and Carri Casteel, Associate Professor in Occupational and Environmental Health at the UI College of Public Health and Associate Director of the Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center, presented at a community forum on gun violence in Dubuque, IA, on June 3.

The forum examined the incidence, prevalence, etiology and prevention of weapons violence in Iowa and the United States. Berg and Casteel presented research on recent trends in gun violence, gun violence policy trends, and research on strategies to reduce gun violence within communities.

The event was organized by State Representative Chuck Isenhart (100th District) and the Dubuque Coalition for Non-Violence in observation of National Gun Violence Awareness Day. It was attended by approximately 50 people, community members, officials, and local gun rights advocacy groups, as well as State Senator Pam Jochum and State Representative Andy McKean.
