Bio

Charles J. Krogmeier was appointed Director of the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) by Governor Culver and Lt. Governor Judge in 2009. The Iowa DHS serves approximately 832,000 Iowans each year. DHS services include health care through Medicaid and health insurance for children through hawk-I. Among many important functions, DHS is the lead agency for behavioral and mental health care, provides child support collection services, financial assistance, child care, foster care, and long-term care support for the elderly and disabled. Mr. Krogmeier has three decades of experience in state and local government. He previously served as Chief of Staff in the Governor’s Office. He was also Director of Management, First Deputy Secretary of State, and Deputy Attorney General of the State of Iowa. Krogmeier also served two terms as an elected member of the Lee County Board of Supervisors and was in private legal practice in both Polk and Lee Counties. He holds a BA from the University of Iowa and a JD degree from Drake University Law School.
