Tom Newton

Tom Newton was appointed Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) by Governor Chet Culver in April 2007. In this role, Director Newton oversees the Department’s six divisions, which include: Acute Disease Prevention and Emergency Response; Administration and Professional Licensure; Behavioral Health; Environmental Health; Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention; and Tobacco Use Prevention and Control. Under his guidance, IDPH has been intimately involved with the health care reform process in Iowa, particularly as it relates to prevention/wellness, chronic care management, medical homes, health IT and health workforce. Director Newton is a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and holds a BA and MA from the University of Northern Iowa.
