PPC Human Factors Program Director Dan McGehee spoke with NPR's John Hockenberry about the dangers of what Hockenberry calls the "texting problem." In the past few weeks, texting drivers have caused deaths in Michigan, California, and Georgia, and to date, 33 states have outlawed texting while driving. Hockenberry suggests perhaps we should begin to consider texting as an equivalent to drunk driving, since the risks are comparable. According to McGehee, texting "has become such a part of our communication it's hard for us to put the phone down. Unfortunately it leads to many horrible crashes."
