Colin Gordon, Professor of History at the University of Iowa and researcher for the PPC Social Science Policy group, recently composed multiple maps that reflect St. Louis's metropolitan area's residential history.  Through four interactive maps, viewers can see the flow of race and property, changes in municipal zoning, and urban renewal programs throughout the twentieth century in the St. Louis metropolitan area. 

The New York Times, in an editorial that explains the racial history behind the protest in Ferguson, MO (a suburb of St. Louis), referenced Gordon’s research.  Ferguson protests were sparked after the death of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black student who was preparing to leave for college, by a police officer on Saturday, August 9, 2014.  However, the tensions between the citizens and authorities have been developing for decades from strategic land use policies.  Read the article here.
