PPC Researchers Publish Teen Crash Report on Distraction

Body

Cher Carney, Dan McGehee, and Madonna Weiss of the Transportation and Vehicle Safety Research Program at the PPC, authored a new AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety teen crash report on distraction.

This first-of-its-kind study used in-vehicle event recorders (IVERs) to cover a large-scale comprehensive examination of car crashes involving teenage drivers between ages 16 and 19.  The naturalistic data allowed better examination of behaviors and potential contributing factors in the seconds leading up to the collision, and provided information not available in police reports.

The goal of this study was to gather information regarding what is happening inside the vehicle during the seconds before a collision to suggest countermeasures that might mitigate certain types of crashes.
