Body

Colin Gordon, a researcher in the Social Science Policy program and a professor of history at the University of Iowa, offered an academic perspective on housing segregation in a New York Times article, “A Year After Ferguson, Housing Segregation Defies Tools to Erase It.

One year after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, The New York Times interviewed residents of Ferguson, as well as activists and academics, regarding the roots of segregation that exist today in St. Louis and surrounding communities.  The proxy of segregation the article focused on was housing, which has been linked to the quality of one’s life (e.g., health welfare of individuals, etc.).

Gordon recently published a book, “Mapping Decline,” that takes a look at St. Louis’s urban history and the factors that have led up to today’s current housing environment.
