Bruch presents policy briefs from spring ICCSD climate survey to Board of Directors

Body

Sarah Bruch, director of the Social and Education Policy Research Program at the University of Iowa Public Policy Center and assistant professor of sociology, presented three policy briefs to the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at the board’s regular meeting. The policy briefs are culled from a survey of Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) students.

The survey — which aimed to elicit candid feedback from students about their experiences at school, their relationships with teachers, mentors and peers, and their perception of diversity and inclusion in the classroom — was conducted in February 2016 among a group of 2,377 students in 6th, 8th and 11th grades.

Bruch and her research team broke down the initial findings into three focus areas to produce policy briefs and recommendations for the ICCSD on teacher and mentor relationships, inclusive school environment, and disciplinary environment.

The briefs are available here.
