Research Highlight: Geography of Opioid Overdoses

Body

As part of a research partnership with Iowa State University and Syracuse University, Professor Mark Berg and co-authors were published in the American Journal of Public Health. In the study, “Using Census Data to Understand County-Level Differences in Overall Drug Mortality and Opioid-Related Mortality by Opioid Type,” the authors classified U.S. counties into six different opioid classes. They then examined how economic restructuring, labor markets, and demographic characteristics vary across these six different opioid classes. They conclude that the opioid crisis is not the same across the United States indicating a need for localized policy responses.
