Former PPC Student Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

A former PPC research student, Hayley Harvey (94DDS, 96MS), was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award at the 2020 and 2021 Awards on October 15. Dr. Harvey is section chief and director of dental education at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, and has worked to increase access to dental care and improve the oral health of underserved populations.

Harvey worked on her thesis, "Factors Affecting the Utilization of Dental Services by Adolescents" during her time at the PPC (1994 - 1996), conducting written surveys with students in a traditional and an alternative high school in Iowa. She was mentored by PPC director, Peter Damiano, who had the following to say about her, "She represents all that we would want in a Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient: passion for her field, a lifetime commitment to using her UI education to help those less fortunate, and a continuing role in educating Iowa's students."

The Distinguished Alumni Awards have been annually recognizing accomplished alumni and friends since 1963 in the following categories: Achievement, Service, Hickerson Recognition, Faculty, Staff, Recent Graduate, and Friend of the University.
