Haifeng Qian

Haifeng Qian teaches applied microeconomics, public policy analysis, economic development policy, and spatial data analysis in the School of Planning and Public Affairs. He has extensively studied why some cities are more entrepreneurial than others, how entrepreneurship and innovation impact regional and local economic development, and what types of public polices are effective in facilitating growth-oriented startup activity. Qian's research appears in peer-reviewed journals such as Economic Development Quarterly, Environment and Planning A, Growth and Change, Journal of Economic Geography, Journal of Technology Transfer, Policy Studies Journal, Regional Studies, Small Business Economics, and Urban Studies. He has won some highly competitive research awards, including the Best Conference Paper Award from the Urban Affairs Association, an Early Career Grant from the Regional Studies Association, and the Charles M. Tiebout Prize from the Western Regional Science Association.

Qian serves as an editor of Small Business Economics (a Springer journal), an associate editor of Economic Development Quarterly (a Sage journal), and an associate editor of Regional Studies, Regional Science (a Taylor & Francis journal). He is the chair of the North American Regional Science Council.
