Bio

Dr. Baecher is a geological engineer by training but has spent much of his career working on risk and reliability of civil infrastructure and statistical methods for spatial sampling and data visualization. Immediately prior to joining UMD he was President of ConSolve Inc, an information technology company located in Lexington, MA. Dr. Baecher holds a B.S.C.E. from UC, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from MIT, where he was also a Professor of Civil Engineering. He is the coauthor of four books and over 150 articles. In 2007, Dr. Baecher received the Commander's Award for Public Service from the US Army Corps of Engineers. He is an active consultant to government and industry on risk and reliability of constructed facilities, especially in water resources development, dam safety, and coastal protection; and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
