Energy & Climate Policy Specialist

Steve is an experienced and versatile energy professional with significant energy and environmental expertise and a strong management background. As a licensed Iowa Attorney, and a North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners certified PV installation professional, Steve is a visionary leader utilizing his knowledge, experience, and skills to assist with the transformation of our energy system away from fossil fuels in Iowa. As the Energy & Climate Policy Specialist at the Iowa Environmental Council, he has the privilege of collaborating with a highly qualified team of professionals focused on transforming Iowa to a carbon free energy future.

After earning his physics and law degrees, he started his energy career as an attorney at Iowa Southern Utilities. Working in various legal and management positions, he had the privilege of guiding and assisting Alliant Energy, MidAmerican Energy, PacifiCorp, their predecessors, and subsidiaries. Utilizing his legal and technical background, Steve established a proven track record of improving the environmental performance and bottom line at these medium and large multinational companies. He successfully advocated for regulatory change, achieving cost effective results, and consistently lead and motivated teams to achieve timely and accurate results in a fast-paced work environment.

With an entrepreneurial drive and spirit, Steve founded GWA International in 2008 with a focus on solar energy. He focused the company on promoting and installing solar throughout Iowa and continues to guide the company, bringing the benefits of solar energy to hundreds of Iowa businesses and residents. In addition, he has worked with the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities and the Iowa Rural Electric Cooperatives promoting and educating on the advantages of solar energy. 

Steve is a Iowa native, having grown up on a farm in Northeast Iowa. He has an associates degree in electronic engineering from the Hawkeye Institute of Technology, a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa.
