Body

The newly launched CIC Center for Advanced Study in International Competitiveness (CASIC) held its first research summit on April 1-2 in Chicago. More than 90 people attended the two-day meeting, "Competing in the New Innovation-Driven Global Economy: Interdisciplinary Research, Experimentation, and Breakthrough Knowledge."

Twenty multi-disciplinary working groups were formed at the summit, consisting of faculty members from CIC universities developing research proposals on international competitiveness. CASIC will combine the ideas into a comprehensive grant submission targeting major funding agencies and foundations.

Kevin Leicht, Chair of the Department of Sociology and Director of the Iowa Social Science Research Center, noted that “Our institution was strongly represented in every research group.” Attendees from UI included: Professor Jerry Anthony, Urban and Regional Planning; Associate Dean David Bills, College of Education; Associate Professor Paul Hanley, Public Policy Center; Associate Professor Maria Kraimer, Management and Organizations; Professor Rangaswamy Rajagopal, Department of Geography; Associate Vice President Ann Ricketts, Office for the Vice President for Research; Associate Professor John Solow, Economics; and Lecturer Hennadige Thenuwara, Economics.
