Lee's Warm Asphalt Mix Research Gaining Traction

Body

Transportation policy researcher Dr. Hosin "David" Lee's warm mix asphalt (WMA) research was featured in the Mid-America Transportation Center's February webinar series resulting in a considerable amount of requests and praise for his project's reports.

Lee's WMA was used in a road construction project in Iowa City which involved asphalt resurfacing. It is the first city in the United States to use the environmentally-friendly warm mix asphalt to pave its roads. The additive, LEADCAP, or "Low Energy and Low Carbon-Dioxide Asphalt Pavement," significantly decreases the pollution typically associated with standard asphalt reconstruction. According to Lee, LEADCAP has improved the moisture sensitivity of the road.

Local news stations, KCRG and KGAN, have highlighted his research which is said to save energy, reduce pollution, and provide a safer working environment for construction workers in addition to extending pavement life.

Visit Lee's project description page for more information on the WMA research which includes a technical brief, recording of the webinar and its slides, and the final report.
