Summer Scholars Work on PhotoVoice Study with Latinx Students

Body

Gerta Bardhoshi, assistant professor in Rehabilitation and Counselor Education at the UI College of Education; Leslie Ann Locke, assistant professor in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the UI College of Education; and Jeremy Swanston, assistant professor of Graphic Design at the UI College of Art and Art History, joined the PPC as summer scholars-in-residence on July 22 to work on their "PhotoVoices" project.

Their interdisciplinary collaboration incorporates school counseling, educational policy, and graphic design to amplify the perspectives of Latinx students who have been identified as academically at-risk in rural Iowa high schools. The group piloted a group counseling intervention with Latinx students at Muscatine High School 9th Grade Risk Academy, using photovoice. Photovoice seeks to empower individuals by examining their world through photography and reflective discussion.

The results of their summer residency will be an art show/forum, a manuscript and a policy brief. You can read their project proposal here.
