The Indian Card: The Ongoing Struggle to Determine Who is Native "Enough"

Body

Carrie Schuettpelz, senior fellow of practice in instruction, and associate professor of practice in the School of Planning and Public Affairs, led a project on Native American tribal membership over the summer, with the help of Acacia Roberts, a first-generation Native law student, and Andrew Parr, a Masters of Public Affairs student. The three presented their research and findings in a Lunch and Learn, "The Indian Card: The Ongoing Struggle to Determine Who is Native 'Enough'" on November 16, 2021.

The presentation focused on the criteria that tribes use to determine membership, whether by the Dawes Rolls (part of an 1887 Act that registered members of tribes for allotment of lands), blood quantum, or their own tribal constitutions.

The presentation can be viewed in its entirety below.
