Cwiertny Discusses Private Well Water Safety in The Gazette

Director of the Environmental Policy Research Program David Cwiertny was quoted in an article by The Gazette on the safety of private water wells in Iowa. Cwiertny commented on the health risks posed by the nearly 100,000 active private water wells that many residents of Iowa depend on for drinking water, due to their lack of regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This means that the residents themselves are responsible for the upkeep and monitoring of the wells, yet less than 10% of them had any water test samples collected in 2020.
